Ben Schumaker and Global Disarmament
Peace Council Internship will result in new proposal

Ben Schumaker is founder of the Memory Project (www.thememoryproject.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating American youth about international peace issues through the use of art.  Since the fall of 2004, the Memory Project has already involved 35,000 K-12 students in international service through art.  Ben is also the author of Astonishing Stories of a Hopeful Humanity, a book highlighting human rights stories from around the world.  He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and is now finishing his master's degree as an intern with the Peace Council.

As the focus of his internship, Ben is researching the history of the global disarmament movement in order to draft a potential outline for worldwide de-militarization in the current era.  Once finished, he hopes to share the draft with the Peace Councilors in order to request their feedback and to determine whether this is a movement they would like to consider pursuing as a group.  Ben ultimately plans to dedicate his career to global military disarmament.
